Your whole life, you’ve probably heard how important it is to keep your cholesterol in check. “Keep your levels low” and “high cholesterol is bad” are common sayings amongst health conscious Americans. But does anyone know what cholesterol actually is? Odds are, probably not, but many assume it’s always negative. There is actually a purpose for it, and it’s much more needed than you think.

What Is Cholesterol?
Simply put, cholesterol is a waxy substance that is needed to build cells. It’s also part of the metabolic process, and is vital for the production of hormones, bile, and Vitamin D. Therefore, it’s necessary that the body makes a small amount of it. However, it’s true that too much cholesterol is bad for the body. Foods that are high in trans fat as well as certain tropical oils (palm oil, coconut oil, and kernel oil) trigger the liver to make more cholesterol. If you need to keep your levels down, you might want to stay away from these. Remember to eat leaner and cleaner!

Why It’s Important
We’ve touched upon the basics of cholesterol, so let’s get into the details. The substance is responsible for the production of estrogen, testosterone, and adrenal hormones. It also aids in building the structure of membranes, keeping your metabolism functioning properly, and producing acids necessary for digestion. In other words, you’ve got cholesterol to thank for your regularity!

Good VS Bad Cholesterol
What many may not realize is that not all cholesterol is made the same. There are actually two different types. LDL (low-density lipoprotein) is the bad kind of cholesterol. It contributes to the fatty build up in your arteries that could lead to heart attack or stroke. Then there is HDL (high density lipoprotein). This is known as “good cholesterol” and higher levels are actually better. It acts as a cleaning agent for the bad cholesterol, making sure LDL is being broken down properly. Talk about an unsung hero!

While the basics of good and bad cholesterol may seem simple, it’s important to keep an ongoing conversation with your doctor. Lifestyle choices such as diet, exercise, and avoiding substance abuse are all positives in ensuring your cholesterol stays balanced.
