Is My Annual Physical Really Necessary?

Four Reasons to See the Doctor Ahead of Time

No one is eager to visit the doctor, so why would you see your primary physician when you’re feeling perfectly healthy? With typical practice being to see the doctor only in an emergency, there are other reasons to get to the exam table that could benefit you in the long run. Lower expenses and receiving treatment more quickly are two possible benefits to staying consistent with your annual exams. Here are four other reasons why you should get to the doctor at least once a year.

  1. Vaccine Updates
It’s important to stay on top of your vaccines, but how will you know if you don’t check in? Time flies when you’re not paying attention, and vaccines for illnesses like tetanus need to be updated every few years. In addition, vaccines for seasonal viruses are great to be made aware of, especially in this pandemic season. Protect yourself and others, get your vaccines!

  1. Family History
Do certain cancers or heart disease run in your family? If so, you may want to get on top of this early. As we age, we become more prone to things such as high blood pressure. Grandma’s health conditions may not be much of a concern while you’re young, but time has a way of creeping up. It’s not guaranteed, but especially if more major conditions like diabetes or colon cancer are part of your genetics, it’s good to stay aware through checkups!

  1. Saving Money
By getting to the clinic before you get sick, you may be saving yourself from greater expenses in the future. Medical bills can be serious, especially if your insurance doesn’t cover everything. No one can predict accidents, but if you have something in your system that needs attention, it may be wise to get ahead of it. Even if you feel perfectly fine, no one likes surprises! Plan ahead!

  1. Lifestyle Changes
If you’re changing your diet or planning to alter your body mass, the doctor will be the best ally in your health journey. Whether you’re trying to burn more fat or build up muscle, lifestyle changes can put stress on your body. The doctor can help with nutritional changes and ensure that you remain safe and healthy as you adjust your lifestyle. Other lifestyle changes can include pregnancy as well. If you’re pregnant or anticipating pregnancy, you’ll need a doctor by your side to make sure you’re getting enough nutrition for you and your baby.

Let’s face it, no one likes to see the doctor on unnecessary terms, and white coat syndrome is all too real. But an early visit to your physician can prevent you from having to deal with major health surprises and save you money in the future. Especially if there is a particular health issue in your family, or you’re anticipating a lifestyle change. You can also look forward to your annual exam as a “relationship builder.” When you have a great, trusting relationship with your doctor, you build confidence and may receive faster care. Never skirt your annual visit. Instead, make the most of it! Your body will thank you for it!
